Arrival
Shot on a borrowed Hassleblad 500 C/M, this series documents my first experience shooting in medium format film. All the images are a result of what I had learnt, discovered and was inspired by during my 13 days spent here in 2016.
- Shanghai Day 1
The Bund
Situated next to the famous river, this was the view from our hotel room.
- Shanghai Day 2
Shop Owner
With a new environment, comes new inspiration.
- Shanghai Day 4
Pink Guy
I started to develop a different way of shooting street due to the relative "openness" of strangers.
- Shanghai Day 4
Monument to the People's Heroes
Waking up early mornings to catch that beautiful light.
- Shanghai Day 5
Waibaidu Bridge
Shooting street on film, I started to treat each frame more preciously. Even if I waited on a scene for 30 minutes, if it didn't work, I would walk away.
- Shanghai Day 5
Traffic Light
However, sometimes if I've found something I really like, I would shoot many frames just to be sure. Even if the hotel guard behind kept shooing me off his kerb.
- Shanghai Day 5
Inside Oriental Pearl Tower
Though a fantastic location, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't really get something I liked. But after waiting for 100 people to pass, I finally got one.
- Shanghai Day 5
Outside Oriental Pearl Tower
I had to handhold this one. Never go without a tripod, for when you do, is when you'll need it.
- Shanghai Day 5
Hotel Room
I made it a habit of waking myself early everyday to catch any interesting light.
- Shanghai Day 6
Multileveled
Shanghai hosted an incredible amount of beautiful architecture, new and old.
- Shanghai Day 6
Jing'an Sculpture Park
I do a lot of waiting for each shot, and it was just this sculpture that I was lucky no guard came to tell me off. Though, I can't say the same for the two people after me.
- Shanghai Day 7
ECNU
An empty classroom at East China Normal University.
- Shanghai Day 11
Pudong After 11
Something incredibly bizarre happens at 11PM in Pudong; All the lights turn off. Arriving too late, Judah and I explored the eerie darkness deep into the night.
- Shanghai Day 12
Last Day
A strange phenomenon happens whenever you do something new; time gets all jumbled. Never before had two weeks gone by so quick, yet felt so long.
- Shanghai Day 13
